4th Floor Creative: The Beginning

For the past month friends, family and co-workers have asked when I knew I wanted to start my own business. It’s kind of a broad question with two different answers.

Having worked in college athletics for the past 15 years, including nine full-time at the University of Cincinnati, I have often looked at my co-workers and said “dang, we should be doing this in my basement; we should start our own business.” But I never took that thought too seriously, nor did my friends & co-workers.

Until January 29, 2015, that is.

That is when the idea for 4th Floor Creative was officially born. Why do I remember that specific date? Well, I came up with the idea while talking to a good friend on my drive home from a basketball game. Why that night? No clue. It just happened. And I am glad it did. By the end of our 90-minute conversation I convinced myself I could do and came up with the name (more on that in a bit.)

The next morning when my wife woke up I told her I was going to start my own business, she looked at me like I had three heads. Three-plus months later, I am back to one head.

The plan for 4th Floor is fairly simple, put together a group of good people who are individually creative, have a specific set of skills and want to kick ass together. I am lucky that in the last three months I have accomplished all of that and somehow, someway, launched my first business. Officially, an entrepreneur.

As for the name, well that pays homage to the Richard Lindner Center on the campus of the University of Cincinnati. A building which I called home for the past nine years. The Lindner Center is an eight-story, modern facility that opened in 2006, just four months before I moved to Cincinnati. Three of the eight floors are underground, meaning the 4th floor is the main floor. The 4th floor is where people come and go. It’s where the action is. Most importantly, it’s where we kicked ass and made great memories.

From those memories, from that experience, 4th Floor Creative is officially born.
